PETRONAS launches drilling platform in Turkmen sector of Caspian Sea

The structure will extract oil from the Garagol-Deniz West field.

PETRONAS Carigali (Turkmenistan) Sdn Bhd launched the GDDP-A oil drilling platform in the Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea on April 10. The solemn ceremony was organized on the shore in the territory of the Kiyanly village. It was reported by the online newspaper NEBIT-GAZ.

The Garagol Deniz Drilling Platform weighs over 3.9 thousand tons. The planned production capacity of the engineering complex is 10 thousand barrels per day.

The structure will extract oil from the Garagol-Deniz West field, which is located 75 kilometers away from the shore. The top of the platform will be set on the base above the oil well. The engineering complex overcame the corresponding distance using tugboats in 16 hours.

According to the chief executive director of the company Ruslan bin Abdul Ghani, the platform will contribute to the further development of the oil and gas sector of Turkmenistan. He noted that the first oil from GDDP-A will be delivered in August this year.

The platform is connected to the shore by a pipeline. It will deliver crude oil to a gas processing plant and an onshore gas terminal. Some associated «blue» fuel will be used to generate electricity.

Monoethylene glycol will be transported to the structure from the shore to prevent oil thickening. Experts noted that the platform will operate offline, which means there is no need for staff to work at GDDP-A regularly.

It must be added that it is already the 4th oil drilling platform, which was manufactured at the Marine Steel Assembly Shop, built by a Malaysian company in the Kiyanly village. The design and construction work for GDDP-A had been carried out for the last eight years.
