Head of MFA of Iran meets with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan

Zarif and Meredov discussed the prospects for partnership in economy and transport, and also signed a cooperation program until 2022.

Head of MFA of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif paid an official visit to the capital of Turkmenistan on April 8. He met with Minister of Foreign Affairs Rashid Meredov. The parties discussed the main issues of further interstate cooperation, as reported by the press office of the MFA of Turkmenistan.

During the talks, the sides noted the similarity of the positions of Ashgabat and Tehran regarding the situation in Afghanistan. The agenda of the meeting also included issues of preparation for the 6th Caspian Summit. Particular attention was paid to the relations of countries within the UN, ECO and OIC.

Meredov invited the Iranian side to take part in the International Conference on Peace and Confidence in Ashgabat on December 12 this year. At the end of the negotiations, the ministers signed a program of cooperation between the diplomatic departments for 2021-2022.

Within the framework of inter-ministerial consultations, the representatives of the Iranian and Turkmen delegations have agreed to hold a meeting of the intergovernmental Turkmen-Iranian commission on economic partnership in the near future.

The focus was made on the prospects for cooperation in energy and transport-transit. In this context, attention was paid to the possibility of participation of Iran in the implementation of the Lapis-Lazuli corridor and the international transport route «Caspian Sea — Black Sea».

The parties also agreed to hold joint exhibitions and forums to strengthen business ties, cultural events in honor of the 300th anniversary of the birth of the Turkmen poet Magtymguly Pyragy.

During the inter-MFA consultations, the officials exchanged views on building up relations in the science, education and medicine.
