Tokayev calls on Turkic countries to place a premium on global biosecurity

The President reiterated the importance of creating the International Biological Security Agency.

On March 31, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev attended an informal Summit of the Cooperation Council of Turkic Speaking States. Speaking at the forum, the leader of Kazakhstan identified achieving global biosecurity and promoting close economic exchange among the Turkic speaking states as the guiding vectors of interaction, the press office of Akorda reported.

Tokayev said the difficult pandemic situation had made it impossible to meet in the sacred city of Turkestan, as previously planned. In this context, the President emphasised that contemporary challenges were spotlighting the particular relevance of unresolved health and biosecurity issues.

Tokayev recalled that Kazakhstan had put forward an initiative to create the International Biological Security Agency at the 75th session of the UN General Assembly. The Agency will contribute to preventing biological threats and facilitate the exchange of data on deadly communicable disease, the President said, calling on the high audience to support his idea.

Dwelling on the development of the Turkic speaking countries, Tokayev pinpointed increased trade turnover as the main goal. He focused attention on the great investment, resource, trade and economic opportunities of Turkestan, historically located on ancient routes, and proposed to create a special economic zone in the region, which should unite the Turkic speaking states.

The leader of Kazakhstan highlighted the importance of accelerating the creation of the Turkic Investment and Integration Fund. Tokayev suggested that the Fund should have its headquarters at the Astana International Financial Centre, as this was a platform on which the best practices of international financial institutions and modern tools were clustered.
