Tajikistan makes life better for people with disabilities

This will be done in the framework of the Accessible Environment State Programme.

The Government of the Republic of Tajikistan has adopted the Accessible Environment State Programme, aimed mainly at improving the quality of life of people with disabilities. The Programme will be implemented over the next five years, the press office of the President of Tajikistan reported on March 31.

The main objective of the Programme is to empower citizens with disabilities in various fields. In 2021-2025, the Cabinet of Ministers intends to implement 27 measures. The Government will allocate 15.3 million somoni (about US$ 1.4 million) to achieve the objectives of the Programme.

9.8 million somoni (over US$ 859,000) will come from extra budgetary sources, the rest of the costs will be funded by the state budget.

The Programme will ensure that people with disabilities have access to social infrastructure facilities and all modes of urban and suburban transport. In addition, the necessary measures will be taken to make information and communications technologies inclusive for people with disabilities.

The websites of all government departments will be optimised to make them accessible for users with disabilities.

Currently, about 150,000 people with disabilities, including about 30,000 children, live in Tajikistan.
