Tajikistan, USA and Afghanistan expand counter-terrorism cooperation

The representatives of the foreign ministries of the three states discussed this issue during an online meeting.

On March 17, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan Sirojiddin Muhriddin, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan Mohammad Haneef Atmar and Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale took part in a trilateral online meeting. The parties discussed the aspects of interaction in various spheres, particularly in countering terrorism, the press office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan reported.

The parties agreed to expand interstate cooperation in countering terrorism, extremism and illicit drug trafficking and strengthening border controls. The discussion focused on overcoming the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Later that day, Muhriddin and Hale had a telephone conversation. The officials discussed partnerships in the political and economic spheres, as well as in the framework of the USAID-funded programmes. They highlighted the importance of promoting partnerships at the regional and international levels.

As was reported, a battalion of the Afghan National Security Forces left the base in Bala Murghab town in Badghis Province. As a result, almost the entire area bordering on Tajikistan came under the rule of the radical Taliban movement (banned on the territory of the Russian Federation).
