Turkmenistan and OSCE to expand security partnership

The possibilities of this cooperation were discussed at the meeting of the head of the Turkmen MFA Meredov with the OSCE Secretary General — Schmid.

On March 17, Head of MFA of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov met with OSCE Secretary General Helga Schmid online. The parties discussed the prospects for expanding cooperation in the field of regional and energy security, as reported by the press office of the Turkmen Foreign Ministry.

Special attention was paid to the importance of expanding the joint fight against terrorism, illicit trafficking in psychotropic substances, and human trafficking. Meredov announced interest of Turkmenistan in developing the OSCE’s Common Security Strategy, which was initiated by Ashgabat.

The head of the MFA proposed using the principles of positive neutrality as a tool to prevent conflicts between states. An initiative to hold a regional conference on combating the financing of terrorism was also put forward.

Particular attention was paid to the unstable situation in Afghanistan. Meredov stressed that large projects in the fields of energy, transport and communications are an important mechanism for the recovery of the economy of IRA.

The Turkmen side proposed to the OSCE to create a Sustainable Energy Council under the organization. The focus was made on the importance of the implementation of the project «Promoting the development of green ports and connectivity in the Caspian Sea region».
