First consignment of coronavirus vaccine arrives in Tajikistan

192,000 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine arrived to Dushanbe from Delhi.

On March 8, the first consignment of the coronavirus vaccine, developed by the University of Oxford and the AstraZeneca pharmaceutical company, arrived in the capital of Tajikistan from India. The medication was supplied to Tajikistan via the COVAX Facility that works for global equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines, the press office of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Republic reported.

The first consignment consists of 192,000 vaccine doses. By May 2021, Tajikistan will have received another 624,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. The country will receive a total of 732,000 doses by the end of 2021.

The start date of the vaccination campaign is unknown. Head of the State Sanitary Epidemiological Surveillance Service at the Ministry of Health and Social Protection Navruz Jafarov reported that the vaccination campaign would be held in three stages. 20% of the country’s population, including the people aged 70 years and over, people with chronic non-communicable diseases, health workers and customs and border force officers, will receive the vaccine at the first stage.

The people aged 60 and 50 years and over will receive the vaccine at the second stage. 42.5% of the country’s population will receive the COVID-19 vaccine not via the COVAX Facility. The campaign aims to cover over 1.8 million citizens at the first two stages and over 3.9 million citizens at the third stage.
