Capacities of Turkmenbashi seaport arouse Ukraine’s interest

Ukrainian companies are exploring the possibilities to build a logistics centre on the territory of the seaport.

On February 23, specialists from the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan and the Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Agriculture of Ukraine discussed through videoconference the ways of enhancing partnerships in the trade and economic sectors. They focused on the capacities of the Turkmenbashi International Seaport, the Turkmenistan Today News Agency reports.

The Ukrainian companies are interested in building a logistics centre on the territory of the seaport. It will allow increasing exports from Ukraine to Turkmenistan and other countries of the region, as well as trade in goods between Turkmenistan and Ukraine. Particular attention was paid to the capacities of the Balkan shipyard. The Turkmen side invited Ukrainian specialists to cooperate in the shipbuilding and ship repair industries.

The Turkmenbashi International Seaport was put into operation on May 2, 2018.  President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov attended the opening ceremony. The seaport has an important role to play in creating maritime transportation systems that provide access to the Black Sea Region, Europe, the Middle East, South Asia and the Asia Pacific Region.

Before new shipping procedures were introduced, following the coronavirus outbreak, sea vessels had been transiting through the seaport to the IRA, Uzbekistan and Turkey (along the Lapis Lazuli route from Afghanistan). Seaport facilities are used to export Turkmen goods to the IRA, Turkey, the Russian Federation, Romania, Belarus and Bulgaria.

The Turkmenbashi seaport is the busiest transport hubs in the region connecting Central Asia and Europe.
