A miner dies in a mining accident in Karaganda

137 miners were working in the mine when the accident happened.

In Kazakhstan, an accident happened at a mine of the ArcelorMittal Temirtau Company in Karaganda Region, which resulted in the death of a miner. On January 14, the website of Karaganda Region akimat reported that the dead miner’s family would receive necessary support.

The accident occurred at the Lenin mine at a depth of 840 metres. Gas and coal were suddenly released during drilling operations at the exploration well. The master driller and his assistant managed to get out quickly of the blast site. The drilling rig operator Nikolai Shadirov was unable to get out quickly of the underground tunnel.

Nikolai was found without any signs of life. He was Grade 5 drilling rig operator and had extensive experience in drilling operations. Nikolai had given 16 years of his life to the industry, of which 15 years he had worked as a drilling rig operator.

The master driller and his assistant are currently at the toxicology department of the Regional Clinical Centre in Karaganda.  They have been diagnosed with acute gas poisoning. Doctors said the survivors had moderate symptoms. 137 miners were working in the mine when the accident happened. The state commission will launch an investigation into the accident.
