Meredov arrives in Afghanistan on an official visit

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and a delegation of Turkmenistan will discuss the progress in implementing the major economic projects with local high-ranking officials.

On 8 January, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov arrived in the capital of Afghanistan on an official visit. The Minister would hold a number of meetings with local high-ranking officials to discuss important economic projects and security cooperation, the press office of the diplomatic service reported.

On the first day of the visit, Meredov held meetings with Foreign Minister of Afghanistan Mohammed Haneef Atmar, Acting Chairman of the Central Bank Ajmal Ahmadi, General Director of Afghanistan Railway Authority and Chief Executive Officer of Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat Ahmad Daud Noorzai.

On January 9, the Minister held meetings with IRA President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and National Security Adviser Hamdullah Mohib.

The agenda of the meetings focused on the implementation of the project of the 30-kilometre Akina-Andkhoy railway and the 500 kV Kerki-Andkhoy-Puli Khumri power line. The parties discussed the progress  in laying the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan fiber optic cable.

The parties are expected to sign memoranda of understanding in various spheres, in particular politics, the agricultural sector and the oil and gas industry.

On January 8, speaking at the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said that the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan working group would hold the 6th meeting on security issues during the visit of the Turkmenistan delegation to Kabul. The Turkmen leader was informed that the Ymamnazar-Akina and Serhetabat-Turgundi transnational fiber optic communication systems were ready for operation. 

The Turkmen leader underscored the importance of implementing the TAPI gas pipeline project and the Lapis Lazuli transport corridor project (Afghanistan-Turkmenistan-Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey).
