Official of Dushanbe Mayor's Office held over fraud

Behruz Mukhtorov swindled citizens out of their money twice in return for a promise to privatize communal apartments under their names.

An official of Dushanbe Mayor's Office in Tajikistan Behruz Mukhtorov was arrested for fraud. This year, he has swindled citizens out of their money twice in return for a promise to privatize communal apartments under their names, the press office of the Agency on State Financial Control and Anti-Corruption reported on December 28.

Exploiting his official position, Behruz Mukhtorov swindled Sh. M. Sonieva out of 24,000 somoni (about US$ 2,124) in February and N. A. Kudratov out of 225,370 somoni (US$ 19,950) in April. Mukhtorov promised them that he would privatize communal apartments, which belonged to Dushanbe Mayor's Office, under their names at an auction.

He spent the money for personal gain in both cases. This civil servant holds the position of the chief specialist for investment and state property management at the executive committee of the Mayor's Office.

Criminal proceedings against Mukhtorov have been instituted. He can be sentenced to 12 years in prison in accordance with Article 247 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Tajikistan.

This is the first time that an official of the Mayor’s Office has committed fraud since February 2017, after the son of President Emomali Rahmon, Rustam Emomali, became Mayor of Dushanbe.
