The process will be implemented as part of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
The government of Turkmenistan will expand disaster management. The relevant issue was discussed by Deputy Minister of Defense Dovran Durdyev and UN representatives on July 9. It was reported to CentralAsia.news by the United Nations press office.
The online meeting was dedicated to the implementation of the Central Asian initiative of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction aimed at increasing the resilience of the corresponding states to natural incidents.
The process is implemented within the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction in the region for 2019–2022. The Main Directorate of Civil Defense and Rescue Operations, headed by Durdyev, was appointed coordinator of the implementation of the program in the country.
The discussion was mainly focused on the need for the transition of the Turkmen authorities from the management of disasters to the management of corresponding risks.
The participants of the event noted that Turkmenistan will take part in the European Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction, which will be held in Portugal on November 2–5, 2021.
It must be added that the relevant program was adopted at the 3rd World Conference in Japan in March 2015. The main objective of this international instrument is to help countries more effectively prevent natural disasters.
