Authorities of Turkmenistan and France showed interest in establishing mutually beneficial partnerships in the space sphere. The issue was discussed at the fourth round of inter-MFA consultations through videoconference on June 5, as reported by the press-office of Turkmen foreign service

The French delegation was led by the Director of the Continental Europe Department of the French Foreign Ministry, Frederic Mondoloni. The Turkmen delegation was headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Vepa Hajiyev.

The parties touched upon important issues of trade and economic cooperation. One of the topics of the negotiations was potential relations in the space sphere. The meeting participants underlined that the states could share experience in this direction.

It must be added that the era of space technology in Turkmenistan started after the establishment of the National Space Agency in May 2011. The first Turkmen communications satellite Türkmen Älem 52°E was launched in April 2015. It was built by the French company Thales Alenia Space.

In October 2019, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov instructed the government to launch a second artificial satellite. The government decided to allocate over 371 million dollars for the development of the space sector during 2018-2024.
