Deputy Defense Minister of Russia marked courage of Turkmen citizens at WWII

The official noted that more than 300 thousand Turkmen people took part in the battles.

On May 9 Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Alexander Fomin arrived in Ashgabat to mark the 75th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War. During the visit, he told about the heroism of the Turkmen people during WWII. It was reported to by “Turkmenistan Today”

The main venue of the celebration was the People's Memory memorial complex. The official underlined that the Great Patriotic War demonstrated the courage of Soviet people to the whole world.

He noted that more than 300 thousand soldiers from Turkmenistan took part in the battles. He focused on the fact that 104 people received the title “Hero of the Soviet Union”.

Fomin highlighted that in those days agricultural production was expanded on the territory of the state, and there were many military hospitals in the country. He paid special attention to how the Turkmen people warmly received orphans from various Soviet republics.

The civil servant handed over the combat banner of the 748th Infantry Regiment of the 206th Infantry Division of the 2nd Ukrainian Front to the head of state Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. Fomin noted the courage of Berdimuhamed Annaev, the grandfather of the country's leader, who was a part of the regiment.

It must be added that the Minister of Defense of Russia Sergey Shoygu visited Turkmenistan in June 2016. During that meeting, Berdimuhamedov and Russian official discussed strengthening ties in the fight against modern threats. Moreover, Shoygu took part in the wreath-laying ceremony at the People's Memory memorial complex.
