Uzbekistan develops spent fuel management plan

Director of the Uzatom Agency Azim Akhmedkhadjaev reported on the development of the nuclear energy strategy in Uzbekistan. The comprehensive document regulating the management and disposal of nuclear fuel and radioactive waste and the decommissioning of nuclear facilities has been developed, Trend reports.

An important provision of the draft document is fuel production from local raw materials, which will optimise the operational costs of the NPP.

Specialists conduct comprehensive monitoring of environmental and geological parameters on the construction site in compliance with IAEA recommendations.

The launch of the first power unit is scheduled 5 years after the start of construction, and the remaining units will be put into operation every 6 months. The project is to ensure year-round electricity, heat and desalinated water supply in the country and help strengthen the economy.
