Central Asia may lose its glaciers by 2050

Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of Tajikistan Bakhodur Sheralizoda presented Tajikistan’s position on glaciers’ preservation at the COP29 Climate Change Conference in Baku. He delivered the speech at the panel discussion on the impact of melting glaciers on the economy of Central and West Asia, organised by the Asian Development Bank and the Green Climate Fund, the press office of the Committee for Environmental Protection of Tajikistan reports.

Tajikistan that has over 14,000 glaciers and provides 60% of Central Asia’s water resources fully supported the From Glaciers to Farms Regional Initiative (G2F).

The statistics on lost glaciers are particularly alarming: over the past decade, the Republic has lost over 1,000 glaciers, which poses a serious threat to water, food and energy security of the region. According to him, Central Asia may lose close to one-third of its glaciers by 2050.
