Speaking at the meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Organization of Turkic States (OTG), President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov drew the attention of the international community to the critical environmental problems of the country. The state of glaciers in the Republic is of particular concern, Economist reports.
According to the data presented by the President of Kyrgyzstan, over the past 70 years, the glacier area in Kyrgyzstan has decreased by 16%, and some regions have lost all of their glaciers.
The situation is of serious concern, since glaciers are the main source of drinking water for Central Asia. According to forecasts, the country may lose more than half of its glaciers by 2100.
To solve this problem, Japarov invited the OTS Member States to boost cooperation in implementing green projects, including renewable energy, forest restoration, energy-efficient technologies and conservation of biodiversity. Kyrgyzstan is set to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
