Kyrgyzstan and World Bank work together to build Kambarata HPP-1

The Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan jointly with the World Bank held a roundtable meeting to discuss the types of dam of the Kambarata HPP-1. The event brought together the representatives of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and the World Bank and international experts, the press office of the Ministry of Energy of Kyrgyzstan reported.

Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture and Processing Industry Bakyt Torobaev highlighted the importance of this project stage, noting that the roundtable meeting is a pivotal point in the development of the Kambarata HPP-1 project.

Torobaev added that the trilateral agreements between the energy ministries of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are a unique case when the three countries in the region unite to implement an important project. Joint efforts will create a high-quality project that will provide Central Asia with clean and renewable energy, improve the water and energy regime and strengthen regional cooperation.

Minister of Energy of the Kyrgyz Republic Taalaibek Ibraev reported that the Republic has completed some important work. The TT-2 transport tunnel with a length of 1,388 metres has been built, and the construction of 15 kilometres of roads, of which one lane has been completed, is underway completion. 80 percent of overhead power lines have been built. According to the plan, the construction a 110 kV power line and a 110/6 kV substation is to finish in late 2024. The construction of the bridge across the Naryn River is on schedule. A workers’ camp is being built. All preparatory stages will be completed by next May.

World Bank Senior Energy Specialist Maksudjon Safarov added that the World Bank is financing the comprehensive development of the Kambarata HPP-1 project. AFRY Switzerland is conducting the feasibility study.

AFRY specialists presented the types of dam of the Kambarata HPP-1 for discussion. International experts and specialists examined them and presented their findings to the participants. Based on their findings, the type of dam will be opted, and the feasibility study of the project will be completed by May 2025.
