Voluntary and cadaveric donation discussed in Kyrgyzstan

Minister of Health of Kyrgyzstan Alymkadyr Beishenaliev informed that the authorities are set to allow voluntary and cadaveric donation in the country during the briefing. Currently, only relatives can act as organ donors, Sputnik reports.

In the country, 2,600 people need haemodialysis, and 18,500 people suffer from hepatitis and liver cirrhosis, the Minister of Health of the Republic said.

However, these diseases are not easy to be cured, and one of the reasons is the donor organ shortage. The Ministry of Health is currently discussing voluntary and cadaveric body donation with parliamentarians, Beishenaliev noted.

The Minister emphasised that this could partially alleviate the shortage of donor organs. He noted that many people who are ready to become donors turn to doctors, and often they are patients’ acquaintances or friends.

Along with the shortage of organ donors, the Republic faces a shortage of blood donors. Only 13 in 1,000 people were registered as donors. The World Health Organization recommends that the blood donation rate should be 40 donors per 1,000 population.
