Uzbekistan and United States launch joint medical-waste-to-energy facility

The Sayar Green company was set up in Uzbekistan jointly with the American company Sayar. The new company will combust medical waste to produce thermal energy. The project implementation plan was approved by the Resolution of the President on July 17, Gazeta.uz reports.

The investor, the company and the Ministry of Investment, Industry and Trade signed an investment agreement in April, and the project is scheduled to be launched on August 1.

The company plans to attract $7 million in investment at the first stage, from 2024 to 2025. It will process annually about 6,000 tonnes of hospital waste collected from Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara Regions, which will allow generating 20 GWh per year. It is planned to attract $108 million in investment at the next stage, from 2026 to 2030, to increase the capacity to 90,000 tonnes of medical waste collected from all over Uzbekistan and generate 300 GWh per year.

Until 2048, the company will lease land plots on the territory of state healthcare institutions, on which it will install waste processing and energy generating units. It is planned to build landfills for household waste.
