EDB recognizes Tajikistan as “greenest” country in Eurasia in its report

Tajikistan has the lowest per capita carbon dioxide emissions among the countries of the region. This is stated in the new study «Eurasia in the Global Green Agenda» of the Eurasian Development Bank.

The study says per capita carbon dioxide emissions in some countries significantly exceed the global average (4.7 tonnes per capita per year): 14.4 tonnes in Kazakhstan and 12.1 tonnes per capita in Russia. Kyrgyzstan (1.4) and Tajikistan (1.1) have the lowest level among the countries of the region due to the high share of hydropower plants in the energy sector.

As reported, the average energy-related carbon footprint was 9.9 tonnes per capita in 2021.

According to official statistics, hydropower plants generated more than 93% of electricity in Tajikistan in 2022 and about 92% in 2021.

The authors of the study emphasise that energy, agriculture, industry and transport in the countries of the region generate the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions.
