Uzbekistan set to open Green Centre in Aral Sea Region jointly with UNEP

The authorities of Uzbekistan is set to open a Green Centre in Aral Sea Region with the support of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). The project will be implemented under the auspices of the UNEP Climate Technology Centre and Network, the press office of the Government of the Republic reported to CentralAsia.news.

This decision was confirmed during the Conference of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions in Geneva, in which the delegation of Uzbekistan headed by Minister of Tourism and Sports Aziz Abdukhakimov was taking part. The idea of opening a Green Centre in the north of Uzbekistan was approved and supported by the UNEP representatives who were taking part in the Conference. Their opinion is that the Centre would turn Aral Sea Region into a region of eco-innovations and advanced technologies.

UNEP has been actively working with the Uzbek authorities for several years. Currently, it is introducing an automated air quality monitoring system in Uzbekistan. The project is supported by the Zamin International Public Foundation.
