Political scientist Korganbaev gives unfavourable review of meeting of Kyrgyz leader with ex-presidents of Kyrgyzstan

On February 18, President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov held a meeting with the former leaders of the Republic in Dubai. The President noted that he had initiated the meeting. Political scientist Mederbek Korganbaev commented on the consequences of this meeting for Zhaparov, noting that his advisers had failed to take into account reactions from citizens and Kyrgyz politicians to such a step, CentralAsia.news reports.

Askar Akaev, Kurmanbek Bakiyev, Roza Otunbayeva, Almazbek Atambaev and Sooronbay Jeenbekov took part in the meeting with Zhaparov. The incumbent President moderated the meeting. The Kyrgyz leader wrote in social media that the participants had reconciled and shaken hands.

Mederbek Korganbaev said many citizens of Kyrgyzstan, including politicians and public figures, view this meeting as an attempt to encourage rehabilitation of ex-president Kurmanbek Bakiyev. His participation in the meeting aroused most controversy and negative reactions. The fact is that the ex-leader of Kyrgyzstan Bakiyev and many of his relatives became involved in criminal cases, including after the events of April 7, 2010. They were deprived of their liberty for many years by court order.

The political scientist noted that the incumbent President was probably trying to reconcile the former presidents and resolve internal contradictions in the country. However, later Zhaparov had to declare that if Bakiyev showed up in Kyrgyzstan, he would be put behind bars by court order.
