Turkmen-Russian relations become unique model for many countries

Ashgabat hosted the Turkmen-Russian business forum. As part of this event, Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Mikhail Mishustin arrived in Turkmenistan. The attention was paid to taking relations between states to the next level. In an interview to CentralAsia.news, a columnist on Central Asia Vadim Shagiahmedov analyzed the corresponding cooperation. He called it unique.

Model for other countries

A Turkmen proverb says «Donуň täzesi ýagşy — dostuň könesi» — «An old friend is better than two new friends»

Undoubtedly, Turkmen-Russian relations can serve as a vivid example, a unique model of interstate cooperation for many countries, especially amid the new realities in the world, a difficult time, in particular for Russia. The relations that have been established one and a half centuries ago have stood the test of time, were strengthened during the Second World War and the Ashgabat earthquake in 1948, were filled with personal and family ties, became related not by calculation, but by spiritual kinship, similarity of the world outlook and mentality.

Connection of cultures

The Turkmen people love many Russian songs and films, which became an integral part of the national culture. Our children are happy to sing «Cheburashka», «May there always be sunshine» at the festivities. Most of the adults know the songs «Katyusha», «Nadejda», «Moscow Nights», «Oh, Frost, Frost». They have watched the films «The Prisoner of the Caucasus», «Only Old Men Are Going Into Battle»…

The most reliable partner of Turkmenistan

Since Turkmenistan has become independent, the relevant interstate relations have been strengthened and taken to the next level. The Russian Federation was one of the first states to recognize the independent development and neutral status of our country. The personal, friendly relationships of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin with the Chairman of the Halk Maslakhaty Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov are a logical continuation of those bilateral ties that have developed and strengthened over many decades. In 2022 alone, the presidents of the two friendly states held five personal meetings. Besides, they had several phone conversations, spoke at summits, and other international events.

Therefore, it is not surprising that Russia has long been the largest and most reliable partner of our country in almost all areas of interstate cooperation. The recent negotiations and meetings at the highest, governmental and industry levels, that established direct relations with large regions of the Russian Federation, clearly demonstrate that. The results have made the two friendly countries strategic partners.

Visit of the Russian Prime Minister

Arrival of Prime Minister of Russian Federation Mikhail Mishustin to Turkmenistan with a representative delegation, which included a number of vice-premiers, heads of large entities, ministers, heads of universities, leading companies, banks, scientists, their participation in the Turkmen-Russian conference held in Ashgabat business forum and the speech of the head of government of a friendly country at the event are another clear evidence of fruitful cooperation between Turkmenistan and Russia. This is the first such a large-scale and representative event in the history of relations between the countries.

Business Forum

During the business forum, numerous round tables, bilateral meetings, negotiations, presentations were held, business contacts were established, proposals and intentions to increase cooperation were put forward, promising areas were discussed, and a solid package of documents aimed at expanding and deepening business contacts was signed. Within the speech at the forum, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin noted that Turkmen entrepreneurs can occupy some niches in the Russian market instead of foreign companies that have left. He also invited representatives of Turkmenistan to take part in a number of events planned in the Russian Federation for the first half of 2023.

Participants of the forum also discussed the prospects for cooperation in economy, fuel and energy complex, transport, logistics, construction, industry, cultural and humanitarian field, migration, customs, youth policy and other areas. According to the unanimous opinion of the foreign and local representatives, the results of the forum and the agreements reached within its framework became a turning point in relations between the countries, an important component in Russia’s turn from the European direction to the East.

Solid package of documents

During the talks between Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov at the highest level, a ceremony of signing a solid package of documents on bilateral cooperation was held.
