Tokayev raises water security issues at Voice of Global South forum

On January 13, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev attended the Voice of Global South Summit via videoconference at the invitation of Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi. Addressing the participants, the President focused on the challenges to water security, the press office of Akorda reported.

The Kazakh leader stated that according to the UN report, more than 5 billion people will face a critical shortage of drinking water due to the depressing climate change progression.

Water scarcity and growing instability have a negative impact on food, energy and environmental security. Economic and geopolitical tensions are rising, which ultimately risks negatively affecting global peace and stability, particularly the Global South that has been experiencing severe droughts lately, the President noted.

Focusing on these prerequisites, Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev proposed introducing the system of exclusive rights and preferences for water technology transfer that will contribute to the efficient and equitable use of water resources.

Noting that Kazakhstan intends to continue to use its agro-industrial potential to counter the global food crisis, the President emphasised that sanctions should not target international trade in food products and fertilizers.
