Stories about Hodja Nasreddin and the art of silk weaving entered the UNESCO List

Sericulture and traditional production of silk for weaving and Telling tradition of Nasreddin Hodja were inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity at the 17th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, which was held in Morocco from November 28 to December 3, the press office of the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Heritage of Uzbekistan reported.

The joint nomination of the stories and legends about Nasreddin Hodja was submitted by Uzbekistan together with Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Turkey – the countries where the stories about the famous oriental wit and philosopher are part of the cultural code.

The films about the cultural and historical significance of the heritage of Nasreddin Hodja and the art of silk weaving in Uzbekistan were demonstrated to the members of the Committee during the presentation of the nominations.

Now, the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity contains 11 elements from Uzbekistan. These are the art of folk musicians and storytellers – baghshi, the national dance Lazgi, the Uzbek plov, the Navruz holiday, the art of lacquer miniatures and vocal and instrumental music – shashmaqom.
