Rahmon highlights importance of protecting national food security

On October 15, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon congratulated his compatriots on Mehrgon (Farmers’ Holiday), noting that the priority task of the country is to ensure food security, the press office of the President of Tajikistan reports.

Rahmon called on local authorities and farmers to gather three or four crops and store large amounts of food products to respond to the sharp and unprecedented rise in agricultural commodity and food price caused by the global crisis.

He noted that Mehrgon is a holiday based on the laws of nature, the autumnal equinox, harvesting, farming and gardening.

The President cited as an example some information about the traditions and customs of this ancient holiday from the works of the scholars of the past centuries, including Aburaihon Beruni.

Rahmon also quoted Adam of the poets Ustod Rudaki, who said, “O king, the Mehrgon holiday has come, it is considered the holiday of kings” during the reign of the Samanids.
