Astana hosts first leg of FIDE Women’s Grand Prix Series

On September 29, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev met with President of the International Chess Federation Arkady Dvorkovich, who informed him about the first leg of the FIDE Women’s Grand Prix Series, which had brought together 12 world’s strongest chess players in the capital city of Kazakhstan. The Kazakh leader noted that this kind of events significantly contribute to promoting chess in the country, the press office of President of Kazakhstan reported to CentralAsia.news.

“Chess is very popular in Kazakhstan, especially among children and youth. We have more than 7,000 chess clubs, but we must at least double this number. Now more than 200,000 people play chess. Chess players from Kazakhstan successfully perform at international tournaments. A road map for the promotion of chess has been developed, and the Chess in School large-scale project is to be launched,” the President emphasised, addressing his interlocutor.

The FIDE President thanked the Kazakh leader for supporting and popularizing chess in the country, noting his readiness to share international practices in introducing chess in schools.

The interlocutors discussed key aspects of long-term cooperation between Kazakhstan and FIDE and considered staging major international tournaments in the Republic.
