Oveniyazova comments on development of arts over the years of independence of Turkmenistan

A lecturer at D. Ovezov Turkmen State School Elmira Oveniyazova told the readers of the CentralAsia.news website about the development of Turkmen music over the years of independence. The specialist emphasised that music in Turkmenistan has reached a new stage of development associated with fundamental changes in the political and public life of the country in this relatively short period. Social and economic transformations contributed to prioritising certain forms and genres and enriching them with new content. The mutual influence of the music of different nations served as one of the sources of innovation, from which the inexhaustible folk fantasy draws inspiration.

“In recent decades, Turkmen opera has declared itself most actively. Turkmen composers of different generations try their hand at the national opera with its own specific world and bright national colours. The national opera-destan by Turkmen classical and contemporary composers, which was revived almost 15 years ago, is performed every year on the theatre stages throughout the country during the Days of Culture of Turkmenistan,” Oveniyazova said.

The art critic noted that all the main and most significant events in the life of the Turkmen people were reflected in the creative work of contemporary musicians. One of the most popular genres of Turkmen folk and modern music is vocal art. In Turkmenistan, singing art, both professional and amateur, is encouraged and stimulated at the state level through conducting numerous song contests. The most prestigious contests are Ýaňlaň diýarym and Çalsana, bagşy.

“Performing arts are flourishing in the epoch of independence. A generation of gifted musicians has grown up during this period. Many of them are laureates of international contests and have earned recognition in the country and abroad,” the musicologist emphasised.

The team of the State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Resul Klychev, whose concerts are a wonderful gift for music lovers, is distinguished by the crispness of the sound, richness of timbres, flexibility and stylistic sophistication. The Orchestra is not only an excellent propagandist of the classics, but also a populariser of modern music.

The young ensembles – the Chamber Orchestra conducted by Tahir Ataev and Camerata Ashgabat, whose founder and art director is a talented violinist Bahram Dolyev, have formed relatively recently. These young performers are distinguished by their constant inquisitiveness and interest in everything new in music. Camerata changes its composition depending on the concert programme. The participation of such well-known Turkmen musicians as Honoured Art Worker, conductor, composer and pianist Rovshen Nepesov, Honoured Artist of Turkmenistan, pianist Vladimir Mkrtumov and a laureate of the Türkmeniň Altyn Asyry Contest, singer Leyli Okdirova speaks of the high professional “bar” set by the young leader of the orchestra.

A composer Rovshen Nepesov is no stranger to creative experiments: his stylistically bright compositions are often performed in the author’s concerts and in the programmes of various musical groups. It should be noted that the “Golden Baritone of Turkmenistan”, People’s Artist of Turkmenistan Atageldy Garyagdyev won the Star of the Commonwealth Award in 2019.

“The musical culture of the epoch of independence is a new rich layer in the cultural heritage of the Turkmen people. The contemporary development of Turkmen music is unthinkable without the folk treasures accumulated over many centuries, which are a precious material for the birth of new images of modernity,” Elmira Ovenyazova concluded.
