Kyrgyzstan highlights water supply challenges at forum

On June 7, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic Dinara Kemelova led a delegation comprising the officials of the Department of Water Resources and Land Improvement under the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Resources and the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision to Dushanbe to participate in the Second High-level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development”, the press office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan reports.

Speaking at the forum, Kemelova focused on the existing challenges under climate change to water supply and energy and food security. In this regard, she called for constructive and mutually beneficial cooperation on water and energy resources management in the region.

She noted that eco-compensation and economic mechanisms of water management need to be developed and implemented in the region.

The initiative to launch the International Decade for Action: Water for Sustainable Development (2018-2028) was first proposed by President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon at the 7th World Water Forum in Korea in 2015 and adopted by the UN Special Resolution with a supporting vote of more than 190 Member States.
