Kyrgyzstan estimates damage from mudslides at almost 90 million soms over past month

On May 11, Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic Urmatbek Shamyrkanov took part in a session of the Parliament and reported on the current situation in regard to mudslides that had occurred in a number of regions of the country, the press office of the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan reports.

The Deputy Minister said the Ministry of Emergency Situations continues to mitigate the adverse impacts of natural hazards.

According to the preliminary data of the Civil Protection Commission, mudslides have caused 89.725 million soms in property damages across the country since the beginning of May.

“Mudslides have caused 68.4 million soms in damages in Suzak district, 5.7 million soms in Alai district, 10.3 million soms in Nookat district, 241,000 soms in Leilek district, 3.2 million soms in Kadamzhai district, 611,000 soms in Kara-Buura district and 241,000 soms in Bakai-Ata district,” Shamyrkanov reported.

Commenting on the report, the Parliament recommended that the Cabinet of Ministers strengthen prevention, preparedness and response to emergencies, protect the people’s health and reduce damage caused by natural disasters.
