The capital of Turkmenistan was awarded an international certificate for its contribution to the Trees in Cities Challenge of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. The document was given by the UN Deputy Secretary General and Executive Secretary of the UNECE, as reported by «Turkmenistan today».
The statement was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the country Rashid Meredov at a regular government meeting chaired by President Serdar Berdimuhamedov on April 22.
The official stressed that Ashgabat was awarded a certificate for numerous tree-planting campaigns. Meredov congratulated the leader of the country on the relevant event. Berdimuhammedov, in turn, promised to continue work on turning Turkmenistan into a blooming garden.
Over the years, thanks to the efforts of ex-president Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, more than 145 million tree seedlings have been planted in the country. The former head of the state also initiated a national forest program.
