Uzbekistan to curb food price surge

President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a meeting via videoconference on the measures to be taken to ensure food security and support entrepreneurs, the press office of the President of Uzbekistan reported.

More attention should be paid to food production to mitigate negative impacts of recent international developments on the national economy, President Mirziyoyev said.

This year, 7.7 million tons of wheat and 23 million tons of fruits and vegetables will be harvested in Uzbekistan to maintain the availability of basic products on the shelves and tables of citizens of the country.

It is also important to ensure the efficient use of land, including 80,000 hectares released from cotton and grain crops. These lands must be used efficiently and planted with other crops that will saturate the domestic food market.

The system of financing is set up to support the families who grow agricultural products on household plots and sell them on the domestic market, which envisages purchasing the products grown in households.

About 100 billion soums from the republican and local budgets will be allocated to clean irrigation systems and dig new wells to supply water to the regions with water scarcity.

Customs privileges and VAT exemption will be extended to the raw materials exported to Uzbekistan to produce vegetable oils.

About $300 million will be allocated to finance the projects for small and medium-sized businesses in the regions.

The above measures will help stabilize supplies in domestic food markets and stop the rise in food price volatility.
