Wind power plant to be built in Karakalpakstan

The construction of a wind power plant has been launched in Biruni district of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, the press office of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan reports.

The construction project will be implemented jointly with ACWA Power from Saudi Arabia that won the international tender among 20 contesters. President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, who arrived in Karakalpakstan for the working visit the day before, attended the ground-breaking ceremony of the new energy facility.

The Takhiatash thermal power plant – the only power plant in the region, built more than half a century ago, no longer met the growing demand for electricity in the Republic. It was modernised and additional energy facilities that produce 560 megawatts were built.

The new wind power plant will produce 360 million kilowatt-hours per year. This will allow powering up to 110,000 households and saving more than 100 million cubic metres of gas per year.

The wind power plant project provides for the construction of 25 windmills and a 20-kilometre 220 kV power line. The construction project will create thousands of new jobs, and after the facility is put into operation, more than a hundred qualified engineers and electrical specialists will be employed.
