On February 24, Rashid Meredov, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, held an online meeting with Craig Jenness, the director of the United Nations Electoral Assistance Division. The parties discussed the upcoming presidential elections in the Central Asian country, as reported by the press office of the MFA.
Meredov provided Jenness with information regarding preparations for an important political event to be held on March 12. Attention was paid to the prospects for cooperation between the ministry and the relevant UN division in this direction.
Jenness underlined that the UN has rich experience in expert support for elections, the introduction of modern technologies, and monitoring voting in various countries. The parties noted the effectiveness of electoral needs assessment missions conducted by the United Nations.
They also discussed the possibility of cooperation in the Turkmenistan-UN-OSCE format. Meredov said that on February 25, the authorities of Turkmenistan and the OSCE Center in Ashgabat started to conduct seminars on modern electoral processes for employees of the CEC and other government agencies.
