Smailov instructs to take more decisive action against “grey” crypto miners

On February 21, Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Alikhan Smailov instructed the government agencies to come to grips with illegal crypto miners during a meeting on the urgent issues in the electric power sector, the information portal of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan reported.

The Ministry of Energy reported on the raids conducted by the mobile teams, consisting of law enforcement officers and electric power industry experts. The three-day investigative and search activities have detected and suppressed the illegal crypto mining activities of 34 operators in 4 large regions of Kazakhstan.

The investigative and search activities are being conducted to detect the accounts used to mine cryptocurrencies illegally. A number of offenders have been detected, against whom the investigations were initiated.

The Prime Minister highlighted the urgent need to accelerate the detection and de-energizing of illegal crypto miners. Alikhan Smailov tasked the Financial Monitoring Agency, the State Revenue Committee at the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Digital Development to estimate the damage caused by these “fishers”. The Prime Minister instructed the relevant agencies to take the most decisive action against them.
