President of Kazakhstan appoints new prime minister

On January 11, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev held a meeting with the leaders of the factions of political parties of the Mazhilis of the Parliament to discuss the candidacy of Alikhan Smailov for the post of head of government, the press office of the Akorda reported.

The press office reported that the leaders of the factions supported the candidate. In accordance with Article 44 of the Constitution of Kazakhstan, the parliamentarians shall approve the appointment of Smailov to the high state post.

The President introduced Alikhan Smailov as an experienced professional devoted to the state. Smailov held the posts of Chairman of the Bureau of National Statistics, Assistant to the President, Minister of Finance and First Deputy Chairman of the Government. The President noted that Alikhanov was well aware of the practical work of the Government and had a correct vision of the future of the national economy and a well-thought-out plan of action.

Following the parliamentary discussion, the vote was taken. The Mazhilis approved the appointment of Alikhan Smailov to the post of head of government. Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev signed a decree during the plenary meeting.
