Tajikistan to achieve energy independence by 2028

On December 21, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon noted in his message to the Parliament that the Republic would achieve one of the main strategic goals – energy independence over the next six years through increasing its electricity generating capacity to 10,000 megawatts, the press office of the President of Tajikistan reported.

Rahmon said 287 hydroelectric power plants, 1,500 kilometres of power lines and 50 high-voltage substations had been built and reconstructed. About 75% of domestic electricity infrastructure has been upgraded.

More than 2,000 megawatts of electricity have been generated additionally over the past 30 years of independence. The power grid of Tajikistan started to work about 10 years ago.

The leader of Tajikistan stressed that special attention was paid to developing the green energy sector, noting that approximately 98% of electricity production in Tajikistan   come from renewable energy sources.

Tajikistan will increase its electricity generating capacity additionally to 4,000 megawatts over the next seven years through the launch of the Rogun hydroelectric power station and the reconstruction of the Nurek, Sarband and Kairakkum hydroelectric power plants, the leader of the Republic said. Three solar and wind energy projects will be implemented over the next five years.
