Tajikistan and European Union discuss expanded cooperation agreement

On November 22, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell paid a visit to Tajikistan. He met with Minister of Foreign Affairs Sirojiddin Muhriddin and President Emomali Rahmon. The parties discussed an expanded cooperation agreement, the press office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan reported.

Muhriddin and Borrell agreed that the negotiation on the agreement would be initiated next year. They emphasised the importance of expanding trade and economic partnerships. The Minister of Foreign Affairs noted that the Central Asian republic would like to join the European Union’s Generalized System of Preferences  (GSP +), which would grant customs privileges to Tajik exports.

The parties also highlighted the importance of reducing tensions in Panjshir Province through achieving a ceasefire and opening roads for humanitarian aid.

Rahmon thanked Borrel for providing assistance worth about 112 million euros to support Tajikistan amid the pandemic. He also focused on the effective implementation of the BOMCA/CADAP programmes aimed at securing the Tajik-Afghan border.
