Uzbekistan fights forced labour and human trafficking

Members of the National Commission on Combating Human Trafficking and Forced Labour, representatives of a number of ministries and departments, public organisations and the media took part in a meeting on combating these negative phenomena, the press office of the Senate of Uzbekistan reported.

Chairman of the Oliy Majlis Senate Tanzila Narbaeva chaired the meeting of the Commission. The agenda focused on the work done by the Commission for 9 months of the year.

Uzbekistan continues to take measures to counter forced labour and child labour and human trafficking by improving the legal framework in line with international legal norms. Specific steps include the adoption of two laws, two decrees, six resolutions of the Cabinet of Ministers and four resolutions of the President. Uzbekistan has adopted a law on criminal liability for involving minors in forced labour, sexual exploitation, as well as in illegal associations.

The participants discussed the targeted work done by the state bodies and civil society institutions to combat modern forms of slavery. With the view to combating forced labour, Uzbekistan signed the Decent Work Country Programme for 2021-2025 in September this year that aims to promote an enabling environment for the growth of decent employment, pay for work and social protection.

The participants also noted that these negative phenomena continued to exist, despite the ongoing measures, mainly due to insufficient attention and disdain to the problem at the local level.

Following the meeting, the Commission adopted the decision and set the short-term tasks.
