Tokayev discusses prospects for partnerships with PACE

On November 16, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev held a meeting with President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Rik Daems. The interlocutors discussed the ways to boost cooperation between the Republic and the international legal organisation, the press office of the President of Kazakhstan reported.

Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev emphasised the coincidence of the visit of the European politician with a significant date – the 30th anniversary of independence of Kazakhstan. The President noted that this was a timely visit, and the exchange of views contributed to reviewing the work done and exploring new areas of cooperation.

The President highlighted the importance of fostering a comprehensive dialogue with PACE. In this context, Tokayev informed the guest on ongoing democratic reforms, the key goals of which were to strengthen human rights and the rule of law and eradicate corruption in the country.

Rik Daems positively evaluated the reforms implemented in Kazakhstan and welcomed Kazakhstan’s accession to the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

The interlocutors also discussed the issues in the regional agenda, including the situation in Afghanistan.
