UN Forum: Kazakhstan accelerates environmental solutions

A strategic framework for achieving carbon neutrality by 2060 should be completed in a few months.

On November 4, Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Askar Mamin held a government meeting, at which the priorities of environmental advance and environmental protection were updated, following the UN Climate Change Summit Conference, the press office of the Prime Minister reported to CentralAsia.news.

It was emphasised that the Government was developing a strategic framework to fulfil Kazakhstan’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, necessitated by significant reforms in the economic sectors, namely the energy, manufacturing, agricultural, forestry, transport and waste disposal sectors.

In accordance with the strategy, carbon neutrality will be achieved through strengthening the sustainability of land and water use, increasing energy efficiency of the economy, electrification and accelerating transition to eco-friendly renewable energy.

The Premier Minister tasked the Ministry of Economy to revise and submit a draft strategic framework for achieving carbon neutrality in 2060 no later than April 1, 2022.

Kazakhstan, as a participant in the COP 26 UN Climate Change Conference, acceded to the Declaration on Forests and Land Use and the Commitment to Education and Youth Empowerment.
