Rahmon calls on UN to use nexus approach to stop global warming

The President of Tajikistan noted that over 1,000 of 14,000 glaciers in the Republic had melted.

On November 2, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon took part in the UN High-level Thematic Debate on Delivering Climate Action. He highlighted the need to use a nexus approach to addressing the challenges of global warming and the ecological crisis, the press office of the President of Tajikistan reported.

He said the glaciers in Tajikistan were melting very quickly; over 1,000 of 14,000 glaciers in the Republic had melted. He noted that the total volume of glaciers in Tajikistan, which makes up more than 60% of water resources of the Central Asian region, had decreased by almost 30% over the past few decades.

The President underscored the importance of setting up the International Glacier Conservation Fund, declaring 2025 the International Year of Glacier Protection and setting a specific date for the World Glacier Day.

The President emphasised that the water-climate nexus should be explicitly set out in the agenda of the United Nations Conference. He paid special attention to drought, long and cold winters, hot and long summers and electricity shortage.

The emphasis was also placed on the importance of using the nexus approach to promote the green economy.
