Kyrgyzstan intends to abandon use of fuel oil and coal

The leader of Kyrgyzstan said the Republic uses 15% of its hydropower capacity today.

On November 1, President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Japarov met with Prime Minister of Iceland Katrin Jakobsdottir during his working visit to Glasgow for the World Leaders Summit. The leader of Kyrgyzstan expressed interest in stepping up interaction with Iceland in a number of areas, the press office of the President of Kyrgyzstan reported.

The interlocutors discussed the existing significant potential of Kyrgyzstan’s hydropower sector.

Noting that Kyrgyzstan used only 15% of its hydropower capacity, Japarov said about 200 mini hydroelectric power plants and 30 large hydroelectric power plants could be built throughout the country in the future.

“If we build these hydroelectric power plants, Kyrgyzstan will be able to switch to electricity and abandon the use of fuel oil or coal. We want to achieve these goals by 2040,” the President said.

The Prime Minister of Iceland noted that her country was greatly interested in cooperation with Kyrgyzstan, noting that Icelandic experts could share their experience with Kyrgyzstan in the hydropower sector.
