Tajikistan to double green energy production by 2050

President Rahmon made this commitment at the UN Thematic Debate on Delivering Climate Action.

On October 27, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon took part in the United Nations High-Level Thematic Debate on Delivering Climate Action. He stated that the country intended to increase renewable energy production by 2050, the press office of the President of Tajikistan reported.

Emphasising that the authorities of Tajikistan would take all necessary measures to double “green” energy generation capacity, Rahmon noted that special attention would be paid to promoting such renewable energy sources as hydro and solar energy.

The President said the Republic currently produces 98% of electricity at the hydropower plants and ranks 6th in the world by the percentage of renewable energy production and consumption. The leader of Tajikistan added that Tajikistan would rank 4th in the world after the Rogun hydropower station was put into operation.

The President said the country was currently implementing a number of forest restoration and afforestation programmes. In addition, the country is working toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
