Turkmenistan hosts first Youth Climate Conference

The participants of the event discussed the main solutions to the climate change.

On October 8, the capital of Turkmenistan hosted the first Youth Climate Conference. It was attended by the representatives of the Youth Union, a group of SDG ambassadors, young activists, and students. The event was organized by the UN and the British Embassy. It was reported to CentralAsia.news by the diplomatic mission of the UK.

One of the objectives of the congress was to prepare young activists to participate in COY16 (Conference of Youth), which will be held in Glasgow on October 28-31. It is aimed at preparing the final summary of the initiatives of the Turkmen youth for COY16 and COP26. The event was also focused on the development of 10 creative solutions and the creation of an active network of youth activists in the corresponding direction.

Some of the participants took part in the event at the building of the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the rest of the activists took part in the conference online.

Special Representative of the Foreign Minister of the United Kingdom for Climate Change Nick Bridge, National Climate Change Coordinator Batyr Balyyev, COP26 Regional Ambassador David Moran, Regional Coordinator for North, Central, and South Asia and member of the COY16 main coordination group Zainab Zahid were the experts of the forum.

During the conference, special attention was paid to the issues of youth participation in decisions to combat climate change at the national level. The participants also touched upon the topic of transforming the energy sector and creating «green» jobs, restructuring financial flows to maintain a low-carbon future.

Some of the speeches were dedicated to the restoration of the tourism industry, taking into account the concern for the environment, increasing the resilience of food systems within climate change, and promoting the climate technology market.

The participants of the event emphasized the importance of reducing the impact of the sports industry on the climate, increasing the responsibility of the fashion industry in combating climate change. Experts and students agreed that in the modern world, art should raise people’s awareness of relevant issues.

During the presentation by UNDP project specialist Jemal Durdykova, it was emphasized that within the fight against climate change, it is necessary to recognize the rights and leadership of local communities, indigenous peoples, and women, especially in the field of finding solutions to environmental problems.

At schools and universities, environmental education needs to be expanded, the climate crisis and climate emergencies should be covered in news articles wider, stressed the conference participants.

It must be added that the congress was also attended by employees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Agriculture, the State Committee for Water Management, and the Ministry of Sports of Turkmenistan.
