Rahmon and Putin discuss evolving situation in Afghanistan

The President of Tajikistan congratulated his Russian counterpart on his 69th birthday.

On October 7, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon congratulated his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on his birthday during a telephone conversation, wishing him good health, prosperity and every success in his important state activities. The press office of the President of Tajikistan reports Putin turned 69 this year.

The leader of Tajikistan emphasised Putin’s contribution to promoting Tajikistan-Russia relations of friendship and strategic partnerships.

The leaders of the two states exchanged views on specific aspects of bilateral cooperation and topical issues of regional security given the recent developments in Afghanistan.

The radical Taliban movement (the organisation is banned in Russia and Tajikistan), almost 20 years later, launched a large-scale operation to take control over Afghanistan after Washington had announced the end of its military campaign in the country in the spring of 2021.

On August 15, President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani resigned and left the country, and the Taliban entered the Afghan capital of Kabul without a fight.
