Tokayev suggests joining forces against destabilization threat in Afghanistan

The President noted that the country had insufficient internal resources to overcome the crisis.

On September 17, speaking at the joint CSTO and SCO summit, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev emphasised that the military-political situation in Afghanistan had transformed recently. However, despite this, there is a threat of its destabilization. With the view to prevent it, Tokayev called on those present to join efforts to ensure peace and cohesion in the region, the press office of the President of Kazakhstan reported to CentralAsia.news.

The leader of Kazakhstan emphasised that Afghanistan had insufficient internal resources to overcome the crisis. According to UN, Afghanistan is currently on the verge of a humanitarian catastrophe.

“There is a possibility that the country will soon face an acute food crisis. This disaster will inevitably cross the borders of the Central Asian region and will have global consequences, primarily due to forced migration. It is important now to move on to concrete actions. Measures should be taken at the level of our states and organisations to quickly build a ‘humanitarian bridge’ of assistance to the Afghan people. Taking into account the existing infrastructure and logistics capabilities of our country, the formation of a regional hub in Almaty seems to be a significant link of such a ‘bridge’,” the President said.

The leader of Kazakhstan noted that after overcoming the humanitarian crisis, the Afghan state would also need systemic support from the UN agencies in various areas. The formation of such a regional hub in Almaty would create optimal organisational prospects for coordinating this activity.

The President of Kazakhstan invited the CSTO and SCO Member States to initiate an informal dialogue with the new Afghan authorities. He expressed belief that such communications would allow knowing the real intentions of the Taliban, establishing a common vision of threats to regional stability and restoring trade and economic relations with this state. He said that much would depend on the next practical steps of the new authorities and the appropriate decisions of the UN Security Council.
