Leader of Uzbekistan defines five main aspects of cooperation with Afghanistan

The Taliban (the movement is banned in Russia) seized much of the country in a short time, and they still have to move from the consolidation of society to the formation of a sustainable government.

On September 16, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev shared a common concern over the security situation in Afghanistan at the SCO-CSTO Summit. The Taliban (the movement is banned in Russia) seized much of the country in a short time, and they still have to move from the consolidation of society to the formation of a sustainable government, the press office of the President of Uzbekistan reports.

“Under the current conditions, there is no firm guarantee that the country will not return to the situation of the 1990s when it was engulfed in a civil war and a humanitarian crisis, and was in international isolation,” Mirziyoyev said.

The President also shared his vision of the main aspects of cooperation with Afghanistan: it is impossible for the entire territory of Afghanistan to remain a source of challenges and threats to security of countries. By joint forces and actions, we need to prevent the movement of terrorists from ‘hot spots’ to Afghanistan. It is important that the SCO and the CSTO work out a common strategic approach to the evolving situation in and around Afghanistan to facilitate the recognition of the new authorities.

The dialogue with the government should be correlated with the fulfilment of the commitments it has undertaken. Social and economic and infrastructure programmes in Afghanistan need to be further implemented.

It is important to prevent the isolation of Afghanistan and its transformation into a ‘rogue state’. In this context, it is believed that the UN could take on even greater responsibility for mobilizing and coordinating international efforts to assist Afghanistan.
