Turkmenistan and Iran agree to settle gas issue

The leaders of the countries Berdimuhamedov and Raisi raised the topic during their meeting in Dushanbe.

On September 17, in Dushanbe, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov met with Iranian leader Sayyid Ebrahim Raisi. They discussed the effectiveness of current relations, as well as issues related to the export of Turkmen gas to the Islamic republic, as reported by the press office of the Iranian leader.

During the negotiations, the parties agreed to settle the gas issue. Berdimuhamedov noted the importance of increasing the scale of the work of the joint commission on economic partnership, as well as the intergovernmental commission on the development of bilateral cooperation. He pointed out the need to expand transit capacities between the countries.

The Iranian leader, in turn, said that cooperation between states can be improved with help of increasing energy exchange and expanding cargo transportation.

Berdimuhamedov invited his colleague to pay an official visit to Ashgabat at any time convenient for him, as well as to take part in the 6th Summit of the Heads of the Caspian States and the 15th meeting of the leaders of the ECO member states, which will be held in Turkmenistan in October and November this year.

It must be added that the representative of the energy commission of the Mejlis of Iran, Mustafa Nahaye, called for the resumption of imports of natural gas from Turkmenistan. According to him, the intensification of purchases of the Turkmen fuel will partially compensate for the gas deficit in winter.

Gas supplies to Iran were terminated on January 1, 2017 due to the large debt of the Iranian company. As a result, the State Concern  «Turkmengaz» filed a claim with the International Arbitration Court for 2 billion dollars. Last year, the court announced a verdict in the dispute between the countries and Ashgabat has won the case.
